Maintenance

Timber Floor Maintenance

To extend the life of your timber flooring, regular maintenance is essential.

The following steps will maintain the timber flooring at its best.

  • Step 1: Matting
  • Step 2: Sweeping
  • Step 3: Mopping

1. Matting

Preventing dirt entering by placing mats at all external entries. These mats should be cleaned regularly.

2. Sweeping

Use an electrostatic mop to remove loose dirt and dust daily or on a regular basis. Loose grit can damage a timber floor quickly when trodden into the surface.

3. Mopping

Wipe all spills immediately. Use a damp mop to clean the floor.

It is important not to over wet the floor when mopping or cleaning as this could change the moisture balance and cause the floor to expand resulting in some of the timber cupping.

Steam mops are not recommended for cleaning timber flooring as the moisture from the steam could result in cupping of the timber and the heat could damage the finish of the floor.

Floor cleaners suitable for timber floors should only be used to protect the finish.

Tips

  • Placing felt floor protectors on the bottom of furniture will help prevent the floor from scratching.
  • Avoid wearing high heels as they could cause dents in the floor surface
  • Rotate rugs periodically and use curtains or blinds to protect the floor from direct sunlight as exposure to direct sunlight can change the colour of the timber.
  • Check the floor for signs of wear and recoat the floor before wear-through of finish occurs to prevent having to sand back floor.
